Paws-On Activities
Fetch the face paint, pom-poms and craft glue for these ferociously
fun activities.
Invent-a-Pet
Cut out pieces of cardboard representing a variety of animal body
parts - noses, ears, eyes, claws, teeth, scales, tails, antennae,
tongues, and bodies. Challenge students to see who can assemble
the craziest pet.
Download, print and color these templates.

Cardboard Roll Animal Puppets
Provide empty toilet paper rolls, construction paper, wiggle
eyes, pipe cleaners, and water-based markers. Let your imagination
be your guide! |
 |
Biscuit Bow-Wows
With some simple materials you can make a dog of your own. Start
with a dog biscuit. Cut out ears of felt and glue them on. Glue
on wiggle eyes. Glue on small pom-poms for a nose, a muzzle,
and "buttons". Glue four medium pom-poms as feet.
Add a collar of glitter or felt. |
 |
Animal Masks
Provide a workspace with paper plates, yarn, pipe cleaners,
feathers, and markers. Invite students to create an animal mask.
Award prizes to all participants (the most beautiful mask, the
scariest mask, the most colorful, or perhaps, the goofiest mask). |
 |
No-Sew Dog-Ear Headbands
Cut a strip of construction paper about two inches thick and
long enough to wrap around your forehead with room to fasten
it. Fold another piece of paper in half to cut out a set of
ears, staple or glue them in place. Then, staple or tape the
ends of the strip together to snugly fit around head. Decorate
with crayons or markers. |
 |
Pom-Pom Pencil Pets
Begin with a pencil, three or four different sizes of pompoms,
some felt, scissors, and glue. Wiggle eyes add character, but
the eyes can also be made out of felt. After creating a pompom
pet, cut a 1-1/2" strip of felt that will fit around the
pencil. Glue to pencil and pet's feet. |
 |
Doggy-Bag Puppets
Take a small brown lunch bag, cut ears, muzzle, and tongue out
of colored construction paper. Glue on wiggle eyes or cut eyes
from construction paper. If you want, you might add extras like
eyebrows, eyelashes, or spots. Once dry, slip your hand inside
and use as a puppet! |
Dog Tags
Download dog tags
and invite children to write their names (or dog's name) on them.
Attach yarn so they can wear their new dog tags to the Book Fair.
