Lasso
Miss Cow Patty
Voted most likely to charm the farm, Miss Cow Patty is an
inexpensive and fun prop for your Fair. Invite the cowpokes
to line up and try their luck throwing the "lasso" over Patty's
pretty head.
Cost:
$15
Time: 1.5 - 2 hours
Here's what
you need:
- Lidded shoebox
for head; cardboard box for body
- 4 mailing
tubes
- 4 black plastic
microwave bowls (hooves)
- Dark brown
paper for spots and eyelashes.
- Brown wrapping
paper (Kraft or butcher) for covering boxes
- White sock,
filler and 2 pink pompoms for nose
- 2" Styrofoam
ball for eyelids
- Plastic eyes
(or paint them on)
- Scraps of
yarn or mop for hair
- Brown mailing
tape
- Glue gun,
scissors, utility knife
Here's what
you do:
Patty's Head
- Wrap lidded
shoebox with Kraft paper.
- Stuff white
sock to fit end of shoebox (fold excess inward or cut off).
- Glue nose
to head, and pompoms (nostrils) to nose.
- Glue eyes
and spots onto head.
- Make eyelids
by cutting Styrofoam ball into quarters, using two only - one
for each eyelid. Make eyelashes and glue to eyelids, and then
glue eyelids to head, covering top third of each eye.
- Cut ears
in the shape of a light bulb. Cut one-inch slit at base of ear
for tabs. Crimp ear at base, then fold tabs back and mount ears
to shoebox.
- Glue "hair"
on Patty's head. Do not mount head onto body yet.
Patty's Body
- Tape Patty's
body box together on bottom only.
- Mark width
of Patty's head in center of end flap, and cut marked lines to
flap fold (Patty's neck).
- On opposite
end flap, cut a narrow strip (Patty's tail).
- Fold sides
of each flap into box, leaving neck and tail free.
- Next, fold
side flaps to center of box and tape shut.
- Cut mailing
tubes to leg-length. Trace end of mailing tube onto plastic dishes
(hooves) and cut out.
- Attach Legs:
Wrap brown tape around top of tube so that it extends an inch
or so beyond the tube. Clip excess into tabs by which to glue
the legs onto Patty's belly.
- Attach Head:
Fold neck flap back towards carton at a 45-degree angle and use
scrap cardboard to form a wedge so that the flap stays in place.
Tape flap, covering all open sides, and forming a neck. Glue head
onto neck.
- Add brown
spots to body and legs, glue hair to tail, and put hooves on legs.
Lasso Rings
You'll need about 50' of sisal rope and some clear shipping tape.
- Cut three
53" lengths of sisal for each ring.
- Tape three
strands together at one end and braid, taping them off at the
end.
- Form a ring
by overlapping both ends about 2" and taping together.
