Book Fair Entrance

Here’s how to create your Cozy Pet Reading themed entry:

The Wall:
  • Cover the wall floor-to-ceiling with a large roll of orange paper.
  • Wrap the doors with yellow paper, leaving room for handles.
  • Create windows with cardboard, paper, and poster paint.
  • Create curtain from a plastic tablecloth or other available material. Attach swags made from the same material.
  • Paint picture frames (PDF 55K) on cardboard and cut out to shape. Attach pictures of pets from posters, or draw your own.
  • Paint bookshelves using poster paint and a long roll of brown craft or wrapping paper.
Props:
  • Use this pattern (PDF 20K) to make the Book Fair entrance sign.
  • Borrow a rug or other comfy floor covering to go in front of the entry doors.
  • Create shadow boxes from shoeboxes. Students can put their favorite stuffed pets in the scene. Create little books using small pieces of construction paper and a stapler.
  • Use a cardboard box and construction paper to make the red and yellow doghouse. Cut the box to the “A” shape of the roof. Attach two extra pieces of cardboard to form the base of the roof. Attach cut up pieces of yellow construction paper to make the roof “shingles”. Use these patterns for the front (PDF 33K) and sides (PDF 33K) of the doghouse. Finish by painting the doghouse with poster paint.
  • Construct the fireplace from two cardboard boxes. Place the bottom one on its side, with the top open. The second box remains closed and is taped or hot glued on top. Paint on the brick pattern using a foam disposable brush. Glue the cardboard mantle and sides to the front. Paint them gray. Make the logs from cardboard shipping tubes.
  • Place a basket of stuffed animal pets in front of the fireplace.
  • Borrow a cozy overstuffed chair and cover it with brightly covered fabric for a throw. A large friendly stuffed dog can sit in the chair. Give him a favorite picture book to read.
  • Borrow an end table, lamp, and fishbowl to place beside the chair. Fill the fishbowl with marbles or aquarium rocks. Make a stuffed goldfish to place inside.
  • Borrow a suitcase or basket for more stuffed pets to populate your entry.
