Those Special Touches
Pirate's Treasure Chest
What better place for Book Fair treasure than a pirate's chest of
gold? This dramatic display began life as an inexpensive locker,
made precious with a coat of gold spray paint. The opulent lining
is gold lame cloth, stapled or hot-glued in place. In the trunk's
hold, filler under the lame forms a display bed for favorite books,
not to mention a generous layer of jewels.
Anchors
This Way!
You'll not be weighted down by this scrap-cardboard anchor! Make
it from this pattern
and assemble with simple slits, then glue. Cover with poster paint,
and tether it to the prow with a child's paper chain.
Add salvaged items old steamer trunk, warehouse pallet,
backyard boards, rope, etc. and your own sprinkling of special
touches birds, "lighted" craft-store cauldrons, marine creatures,
shells for a peerless Book Fair backdrop.
Sand is Essential
Where X marks the spot, what do you find? Sand! Start your pile
with a plastic bag stuffed with paper to form a mound. Dampen the
surface for sticking power, then pour on the sand. We used a 50-pound
bag of playground sand. Sprinkle with craft-store "jewels," add
shovels and maybe a crab or two (don't forget to include their tracks).
